Runners Help Ethiopia School Garden Project

You can't beat the scenery runners will have at the Scramble for Ethiopia

The Scramble for Ethiopia, a 5K, 10K and Kid’s run in Bozeman, Montana on July 10th will raise money for the continued construction of the Bright Hope School self-sustaining mini-farm project in Addis Ababa. Last year’s run helped fund the building of the chicken hatchery and vegetable garden plots that will soon provide daily nutrition to the 2100 students.

If you are in the Bozeman area on July 10 or if this looks like your kind of race, find out more and register at: Scramble for Ethiopia

Summer Jobs for Vietnam Students

The kids at Vinh Long school are enjoying their summer break from their daily studies. Most will work this summer by helping their parents, either out in the rice fields, fishing or with daily chores at home. When school starts up again in August, 138 children will be benefiting from the Vietnam Partners in Hope monthly support.
Without this financial help, many of the children would not be able to return to school. Their chance of emerging from their families’ poverty then lessens greatly.

Like 10-year-old Hong Yen who will start 5th grade this fall, she lives with her mother and her younger brother. Hong Yen’s father passed away so her mother provides for Hong Yen and her brother by working as a temporary farm laborer. Most of the children in the Partnership program come from families like Hong Yen’s; they don’t own their own farm land so their earning potential is extremely low.

The funds from Partnership provide for the basic books, supplies and uniforms the children will need. But again this year, Thuy in Vietnam, is asking for additional help in purchasing each of the 138 students a special set of books. These are Math, Literature, Chemistry, Physics and English exercise work books. The total amount to purchase 138 sets is around $22/student or $3000 total.

Survival for Ethiopian Families

Ethiopia Partners in Hope contributions are helping provide survival funds for 60 children in 27 families in northern Ethiopia. All of these families are one parent homes. Most are like Akeza's; her husband died from AIDS so she is left alone to raise her small child Yared. Since Akeza has no skills to find a job and is herself infected with AIDS, she is given enough money for rent and some food supplies every month. For special holidays, chickens are purchased for each family.

The Partnership goal is to increase job training so that most of the single mothers in the program can eventually be employed. Already, five of these mothers have received micro-loans through the Partnership program, to help them start a small business.

Thanks to Church Work Groups, Security Wall Lengthens at Ethiopia’s Bright Hope School

Over 200 meters of additional security wall is nearly complete at the Bright Hope School in Addis Ababa, after mission groups from two Montana churches put in two weeks of hard work. The 17 workers from the United States labored side-by -side with people from the Bright Hope community.

The members of these two churches, Harvest Church of Billings and Journey Church of Bozeman, were the initial supporters of the self sustaining mini-farm project for the 2100 students of the Bright Hope School.
